Dr Guy Preston
Guy is a former Deputy Director-General for Environmental Programmes in the South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), and earlier in the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF). He retired in June 2020 after 25 years of running the Environmental Programmes. He now does volunteer / pro bono conservation work.
Guy was a Special Advisor to the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry, Professor Kader Asmal, and iniMated and led the Working for Water programme from 1995 to control invasive species. Following devastaMng fires along the Table Mountain chain in January 2000, Guy set up and led the Ukuvuka Campaign. In 2003, he then set up and led the naMonal Working on Fire programme, an integrated wildfire management programme for the country.
Guy helped to draft the National Veld and Forest Fire Act (1998), the National Water Act (1998) and the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (2004). He drafted the Alien and Invasive Species Regulations in 2014, and established the biosecurity capacity for the country.
